Wallscanner D-tect 100

Everybody has experienced it, the fear of drilling into a power cable or a water pipe. As this problem had previously been resolved rather insufficiently, we decided to develop a new, reliable detection tool. So far, craftsmen had the choice between very costly special devices which are mainly used by experts to monitor the coverage of reinforcing steel in armored concrete and numerous low-cost devices with poor capabilities.

This gap is now closed by the Wallscanner D-tect 100. This tool is reliable and precise in locating the most diverse materials such as electric cables, metals and – a globally unique feature – plastic tubes or cavities in walls. For less than $1,300, craftsmen can purchase a detection tool indicating all plumbing, fitting, and wiring in the wall up to a depth of 100 mm. This was rendered possible by a sophisticated technology installed by Bosch in a user-friendly device.

Let us assume that a craftsman wants to drill a hole in the wall at a certain position. He runs the Wallscanner over the place of the intended bore. The electro-magnetic field generated by the device is influenced by any irregularities in the wall – physically spoken, by the difference in the dielectric behavior of the materials. A sensor detects the changes in the electro-magnetic field, and a high-performance signal processor correlates the data with the length traveled. The buffered raw data image – which is invisible to the user – resembles pictures generated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tomographs.

The prime objective of our development activities was to meet the customers' request for easy-to-understand information. This has become possible with our sophisticated software. Based upon the raw data this software computes a clear, meaningful picture. The graphical representation shows the cross-section of the wall including any obstacles to the drilling operation. Even the permitted drilling depth until the obstacle in the wall is reached is displayed. If drilling is stopped at the displayed depth, the drill will not damage the object lying underneath.

We have attached special importance to easy navigation. When the display was developed, we incorporated valuable input provided by experienced craftsmen and experts. This resulted in a tool which is very easy to operate.

The D-tect 100 by Bosch makes the craftsmen's work much easier. They do not have to speculate about the location of water pipes in old buildings, nor do they have to be afraid of hitting a power cable; the new detector offers maximum reliability. The device has paid off as soon as the first potential damage has been prevented because repairing a damaged water pipe or power cable and drying out the affected rooms tends to be very costly and time-consuming for craftsmen's businesses – quite apart from the damage to the reputation of the business.
