Make way for the Disto A2. |

Here it is. The DISTO A2. It's the latest brainchild from Leica Geosystems and rounds out their now 4-model range of laser distance meters.
Leica invented the laser distance meter way back in 1993, revolutionising the way we could measure. No more rulers or tape measures? Well, it hasn't been that revolutionary as its price is a little higher! Anyway, since this occasion over 750,000 have been sold - benefitting many trades with faster and more accurate measuring.
But "Another one?" you say... well, there is a point to this model. 90% of our customers only use these instruments indoors, and rarely take measurements over 20 metres. The many extra features and range found on the more expensive models are rarely used... so "let's save you a few bucks" they thought. Nice of them eh?
This new mini-sized Disto can 'only' cover a range of 60 metres, and the accuracy is a stated +/- 1.5mm. It's also only able to measure indoors.
So... what can you expect from the Disto A2? Well, the vital specs are very impressive: Weighing in at 150g and sized at a tiny 124mm long (55mm wide and 31mm high), this makes it roughly the same size by volume as it's slightly up-market sibling the A3 (135 x 45 x 31 & 145g).
What's really impressive is the accuracy: +/-1.5mm. I thought that this alone might steal sales from the A3 which until recently had an accuracy of +/-3mm. Luckily Leica's next incarnation (released only a few weeks ago) of the A3 has improved this to equal the A2. Having said that, an extra 40m range is not going to be the feature that the A3 can significantly differentiate on the A2 (and $100 extra).
